An Excerpt from Shikwa by Allama Iqbal

1. क्यूँ ज़ियाँ-कार बनूँ सूद-फ़रामोश रहू
फ़िक्र-ए-फ़र्दा न करूँ महव-ए-ग़म-ए-दोश रहूँ
हम-नवा मैं भी कोई गुल हूँ कि ख़ामोश रहूँ

 -Kyun Ziyaan Kaar Banun, Sood Framosh Rahun
Fikr-e-Farda Na Karum, Mahw-e-Ghum-e-Dosh Rahun
Humnawa Main Bhi Koi Gul Hun Ke Khamosh Rahun

Translation: 

Why should I become false and Follow wrong path?

Why should I not care about myself and be among wrong doers?

My beloved Am I flower to just silently hear your excuses?

 

2. थी तो मौजूद अज़ल से ही तिरी ज़ात-ए-क़दीम
फूल था ज़ेब-ए-चमन पर न परेशाँ थी शमीम
शर्त इंसाफ़ है ऐ साहिब-ए-अल्ताफ़-ए-अमीम

- Thi To Maujood Azal Se Hi Teri Zaat-e-Qadim
Phool Tha Zaib-e-Chaman, Par Na Preshan Thi Shamim
Shart Insaaf Hai, Ae Sahib-e-Altaf-e-Amim

 Translation: 

For Eternity there used to exist the existence of love

The flower was in your garden but you did not know the fragrance

The reason was your lack of justice, 'O' the master of wrong talk,

 

3. हम से पहले था अजब तेरे जहाँ का मंज़र
कहीं मस्जूद थे पत्थर कहीं मा'बूद शजर
मानता फिर कोई अन-देखे ख़ुदा को क्यूँकर

-Hum Se Pehle Tha Ajab Tere Jahan Ka Manzar
Kahin Masjood The Pathar, Kahin Maabood Shajar
Manta Phir Koi Un-Dekhe Khuda Ko Kyunkar 

  Translation: 

Before us the scenario of your world was different,

sometimes you used to bow to tree or pray to stone,

then how could you have believed in an Unseen God

4.पर तिरे नाम पे तलवार उठाई किस ने
बात जो बिगड़ी हुई थी वो बनाई किस ने 

-Par Tere Naam Pe Talwar Uthai Kis Ne
Baat Jo Bigri Huwi Thi, Woh Banaai Kis Ne

Translation: 

But Who raised Sword (struggle) in your name,

Who solved those matters which were raised

 

5. थे हमीं एक तिरे मारका-आराओं में
ख़ुश्कियों में कभी लड़ते कभी दरियाओं में
दीं अज़ानें कभी यूरोप के कलीसाओं में
कभी अफ़्रीक़ा के तपते हुए सहराओं में

-The Hameen Ek Tire Maarka Aaraaon Mein!
Khushkion Mein Kabhi Larte, Kabhi Dariyaon Mein,
Deen Azaanen Kabhi Europe Ke Kaleesaaon Mein
Kabhi Africa Ke Tapte Huwe Sehraaon Mein. 

 Translation: 

We were the ones standing in your name in fight

sometimes fighting in the strait sometimes in the sea

We gave the Azaan in the Everglades of Europe

We were the ones giving Azaan in deserts of Africas

6. टल न सकते थे अगर जंग में अड़ जाते थे
पाँव शेरों के भी मैदाँ से उखड़ जाते थे
तुझ से सरकश हुआ कोई तो बिगड़ जाते थे
तेग़ क्या चीज़ है हम तोप से लड़ जाते थे
-Tal Na Sakte The Agar Jang Mein Arh Jate The
Paon Sheron Ke Bhi Maidan Se Ukhar Jate The
Tujh Se Sarkash Huwa Koi To Bighar Jate The
Taeg Kya Cheez Hai, Hum Toup Se Larh Jate The 

Translation:

If we cannot evade we used to stand firm on ground

Even the Mights of Lion used to surrender to us

If anyone went against you then they knew our wrath,

And we never cared if they had swords or Canons

7. महफ़िल-ए-कौन-ओ-मकाँ में सहर ओ शाम फिरे
कोह में दश्त में ले कर तिरा पैग़ाम फिरे
और मालूम है तुझ को कभी नाकाम फिरे 

- Mehfil-e-Kon-o-Makan Mein Sehar-o-Sham Phire
Koh Mein, Dasht Mein Le Kar Tera Pegham Phire
Aur Maaloom Hai Tujh Ko, Kabhi Nakaam Phire !

Translation:
With your gatherings we wandered from day and Nights
We wandered into the caves and forest with your plights
And you know we never were unsuccessful in your fights

8. फिर भी हम से ये गिला है कि वफ़ादार नहीं 

 हम वफ़ादार नहीं तू भी तो दिलदार नहीं

-Phir Bhi Hum Se Yeh Gila Hai Ke Wafadar Nahin
Hum Wafadar Nahin, Tu Bhi To Dildar Nahin!

Translation:

Then also you are Complaining I am not Loyal,

 I am not Loyal, but you are also not a good lover.
